Yo is a Japanese Kana that can be written in Hiragana or Katakana. It has the property of being able to change the sound of other letters. It can also be used as an emphatic, when added to the end of a word.
Hiragana – よ - A good way to remember this one is ‘You are sitting down’, as it looks like a cross legged figure.
Katakana –ヨ A good way to remember this is ‘yo man, you put your E upside down.’
Yo, when added to the end of a letter from the い line, can be written in small form to change the sound.
For example き び and じ (Ki, Bi and Ji).
Become きょ びょ and ぎょ
Kyo, Byo, and Gyo)
When added to the end of a word , yo also functions as an emphatic, or an exclamation mark. For example;
この 犬 が 大き です
The dog is big.
この 犬 が 大き ですよ
That’s a big dog!
