Yo

March 30th 2008 13:52
Yo is a Japanese Kana that can be written in Hiragana or Katakana. It has the property of being able to change the sound of other letters. It can also be used as an emphatic, when added to the end of a word.

Hiragana – よ - A good way to remember this one is ‘You are sitting down’, as it looks like a cross legged figure.

Katakana –ヨ A good way to remember this is ‘yo man, you put your E upside down.’

Yo, when added to the end of a letter from the line, can be written in small form to change the sound.

For example and (Ki, Bi and Ji).

Become きょ びょ and ぎょKyo, Byo, and Gyo)

When added to the end of a word , yo also functions as an emphatic, or an exclamation mark. For example;

この 犬 大き です
The dog is big.

この 犬 大き ですよ

That’s a big dog!

Ya is a Japanese character. It can be written in Hiragana or Katakana. It can also be used to change the sound of other kana, and function as a particle

Hiragana: や This can be remembered as Ya For Yak (looks like a Yak's head with two horns)

Katakana: ヤ Again, this one looks a bit like a yak so the same meme again should serve you well.

Where a small ya is added to a kana ( かな; a Japanese letter character) it serves to to change the sound. For example;

ゃ (Gi ya) = ぎゃ (Gya).
 や (Bi ya) = びゃ (bya)
 や (Hi Ya) = ひゃ (Hya)

Ya is also used to make lists. In this respect it is similar to to ( と and shi ( し. However it is used when making lists that are exhaustive, unlike to, and less formal than shi.

日本 や フランス に 行きました
Nihon ya Furans ni ikimashita.
I went to Japan and France (only).

りんご や みかん を 食べました
Ringo ya mikan o tabemashita.
I ate (only) an apple and Mandarin.
