April 19th 2008 11:53
Hiragana: げんき

Kanji: 元気

げんき (Genki) is one of a number of Japanese words that have no real English language equivalent.

The words means ‘healthy’ or ‘well’ but also connotes vibrancy or energy. Nihongoresources.com defines it as health(y), robust, vigor, vigour, energy, vitality, vim, stamina, spirit, courage, pep.

A standard Japanese inquiry is げんき ですか (genki desuka). This is often translated as ‘How are you’ or ‘are you well’. Literally is means ‘are you GENKI’.
