Ya

March 15th 2008 07:53
Ya is a Japanese character. It can be written in Hiragana or Katakana. It can also be used to change the sound of other kana, and function as a particle

Hiragana: や This can be remembered as Ya For Yak (looks like a Yak's head with two horns)

Katakana: ヤ Again, this one looks a bit like a yak so the same meme again should serve you well.

Where a small ya is added to a kana ( かな; a Japanese letter character) it serves to to change the sound. For example;

ゃ (Gi ya) = ぎゃ (Gya).
 や (Bi ya) = びゃ (bya)
 や (Hi Ya) = ひゃ (Hya)

Ya is also used to make lists. In this respect it is similar to to ( と) and shi ( し). However it is used when making lists that are exhaustive, unlike to, and less formal than shi.

日本 や フランス に 行きました
Nihon ya Furans ni ikimashita.
I went to Japan and France (only).

りんご や みかん を 食べました
Ringo ya mikan o tabemashita.
I ate (only) an apple and Mandarin.
